Jean Says: If anyone was looking at our track recently, they may be lead to believe that we'd lost something around the Skye - Mull area, and were going back and forth to see if we could find it. We said we were reluctant to leave Tobermory, so we decided to go past it again today and wave at it. It was a late in the morning decision, but we like the area so much, that we're not ready to leave just yet, and the weather seems to be staying sunny and nice in a fresh sort of way. We decided to try Mallaig for size this time up, and then maybe Portree, which has bright coloured houses and looks almost as pretty as Tobermory. It's the Admirable Bob's Birthday tomorrow, and he said that he's not particularly fussed about how he wants to spend the day, so I've planned to surprise him with a day's sailing. It may be the start of something!

In Portree, we hope to find somewhere extra special for a romantic birthday dinner. The birthday present situation may be a little tricky because I've had limited opportunity to find anything interesting. I have got things, but don't want to mention what they are here, because there should be some element of surprise, even if it is six packets of shortbread, a tattoo voucher and a lucky shamrock.

Mallaig is an authentic and still thriving fishing town, and reminds us of Newlyn. It buzzes with activity, and there's something quite exciting about sharing moorings with numerous large fishing trawlers and their industrious crews. It's such a tough job, and we can only feel great respect for the men who tolerate extreme weather conditions to make an often meagre living.

  1. Happy Birthday 'BOBALONG' sounds like you are both having a wonderful time - just be careful, and never under-estimate those Vikings ! We are really looking forward to seeing you both again and hearing of all your tales of high seas adventure. Is it too soon to be thinking of a lecture tour ?
You could always supplement the Salty Sea dog stuff with live cooking demonstrations on the Remoska. We are heading off for a little high seas adventure of our own at the weekend - 10 days sailing along the Turkish coastline with the usual crew. So we will catch up with your progress when we get back. Lots of love to you both. Pauline & Steve xx

  3. Happy birthday Bob. We have naturally bought you a massively expensive card and present but unfortunately didn't know where to send them. So, just this note on your blog then!! Best wishes from Ian, Liz, Tom & Kathryn xxx
ps. We'll save the card for next year but I'm afraid the present is on ebay with 50 bids and 200 watchers.
